Description

An important element of tissue engineering in the investigation of tissue replacement is the development of support structures (Scaffolds). Thereby, the design of these scaffolds as well as the mechanical properties must reflect the human tissue characteristics to ensure the good growth of the cells and also be able to withstand the body. This course offers a practical introduction about mechanical testing of the Scaffolds. There will be an introduction about the technical equipment of the mechanical laboratories. The students will have insights in different mechanical techniques. The tensile tests on the electrospun scaffolds, made of different polymers, are performed using a tensile testing machine (Electro Force LM1 Test Bench).

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge on mechanical properties of materials (especially plastics) including elasticity, stiffness, Stress/Strain profiles etc. Basic knowledge on microscopy techniques for the evaluation of structural and morphological properties of materials including optical and electron techniques.
